The series follows the life of Billy Robinson (John Raymond) as a middle school then high school student alongside his best friends Al Travis (Matt Smith), Kelly Jefferson (Julie Johnson) and Cece Roberts (Stevie Lowe). He also goes through many situations with his family members, his older sister Chelsea (Gwen Rush), his mom Donna (Ellen Price) and his dad Jack (Jordan Black). He is a 7th grader in the 1st season and the fifth and final season sees him as an 11th grader. There were plans for the series to end the show in their last year in school, but due to many creative differences and desires, it was decided that season 5 would be the last. The series concluded on June 27, 1992.
The series is considered to be: The One that Made Teen Sitcoms Popular. It also spawned the career of John Raymond, who would continue to have success in his career. The series won a total of 18 awards and 36 nominations. The series was described as being one the best-written shows of all time by Rolling Stone in 2007.
The series finale: This Is The End, currently holds the record for having the most watched series finale of any TV show in the US. It premiered to an audience of 128.9 million people, a record.
The series was noticeable for including some topics that were not noticed much on sitcoms, such as socialising difficulties, which was centered on the title character. The creator Andrew Williamson, said that he partially based Billy on himself and his nephew Tim, and that he wanted him to be different than other title characters.
The series has since been regarded as one of the most important sitcoms of all-time and one that truly broke ground in the TV industry.
