The First Time-The story of a well known hit

On May 1, 1995 the song was played in all radios across the country. It was something really unexpected, the girl who stated in an interview that she wasn't really planning on pursuing a singing career, had released a song that was.....so good! It was a massive hit, it immediately entered the Billboard Hot 100 at #5 and within a few hours of being released it went to........................................#1! #1?! Unbelievable! Would you believe it? Throughout that week everyone was stating their opinions of the song:
Rolling Stone: The music, the lyrics, are just fantastic. About a girl remembering when she for the first time met the love of her life and to think that this girl also stated last August that she wouldn't really pursue a singing career.....Wow!
Marc Stephenson: ♩ So when we met for the first time, na na na na na......I'm in love with this song, it's so perfect; Jenny Nagy, if you're reading this, keep on with music.
The video was shown on MTV on May 6, five days after the song was released, the video was considered good for what it was. A nice, sweet girl, wearing a blue dress, expressing her love. And the guitar solo part in the video was well performed.
Nagy herself knew that the song was going to be succesful in its own right, and it turned out to be that way, reaching #1 in 15 countries, pretty impressive for a debut single, from a 16-year-old girl who likes acting more than singing.
-"When the song was finished, I was just so proud of myself becaused I had worked hard on it. The guiar solo part was suggested by Jake Thompson, the lead guitarist on the album, he suggested that I write a guitar solo when I was writing the music; admittedly I wasn't really interested in that considering the song's tume. But hwen I recorded it, it just sounded beautiful, so much that when I finished I started to cry.
When the album was finished in January of '95, I wasn't really thinking of any of the singles, I just wanted to focus on my exams that were coming. It wasn't until late February that I started thinking of what songs to release as singles; while I had a few doubts of released a few songs like: "Somewhere in This Place", "Tell Me" or even "Do It", I always knew that I wanted "The First Time" because it was really good. As for the title, I initially wanted to name it after myself, but around the last few sessions, Fred Roberts, the producer, suggested me to name it The First Time. It wasn't until everyone agreed that I joined them"-stated Nagy in an interview in late July 1995.
The song is widely considered as Nagy's singature songs; it's her second most succesful single, after "Play My Game" and her most succesful of the 1990s. Billboard in 2005, in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the single, released an article rgarding of the song as one of the best all of time and also the most unexpected thing from Nagy. It is certainly a song that will forever remain in the history of pop music.
